At EOAC, we believe early childhood education is about more than what happens in the classroom. It’s about building strong families, creating meaningful connections, and supporting the whole child through the strength of their support system.

Our 5th Annual Box Car Show at Thurman E. Dorsey Head Start was a perfect example of that in action.

Creativity, Connection, and Community

Families gathered for a day full of creativity, imagination, and shared experiences as children and their parents worked side by side to design and build their own box cars.

From colorful race cars to imaginative creations, each design told a story. But beyond the creativity, something even more important was happening.

Parents and children were spending intentional time together. They were collaborating, problem-solving, and creating memories.

That is where real learning begins.

The Work Behind the Moments

While events like the Box Car Show are fun and engaging, they are also the result of intentional planning and deep commitment from our Head Start team.

In the month of February alone, EOAC Head Start staff coordinated 22 parent engagement activities across our sites. Each one was designed to strengthen the connection between families and their child’s learning experience.

Our Family Services team plays a critical role in this work every day. They support families through:

• Goal-setting and long-term planning
• Resource referrals that meet immediate and ongoing needs
• Parent engagement opportunities that promote family well-being
• Ongoing partnership to support school readiness

This is not one-time support. It is a continuous relationship built on trust and encouragement.

Real Impact Across Families

The numbers tell an important story about the depth of this work:

• 841 community referrals were provided to families in February alone
• 342 families have completed Family Goals this program year so far
• 533 families currently have active Family Partnership Agreements

Each of these numbers represents a family taking steps forward. A parent setting goals. A child gaining support. A household moving toward greater stability.

A Whole-Family Approach

At EOAC, Head Start is designed to support not just children, but entire families.

When parents are engaged, children thrive.
When families are supported, outcomes improve.
When relationships are strong, learning deepens.

The Box Car Show may have been a single event, but it reflects a much larger commitment to building those connections every day.

Why It Matters

Moments like these are a reminder that early childhood education is not only about preparing children for school. It is about preparing families for success.

We are proud of our Head Start staff who continue to go above and beyond to create meaningful opportunities for engagement, growth, and connection.

And we are grateful for the families who show up, participate, and partner with us in this important work.
