Some homes carry more than memories — they carry lifetimes. For Miss Elsie LaDuke, her home was a place filled with history, love, and nearly eight decades of life.

When our Assistant Director of Weatherization first visited her home, he was greeted by a smile “that could light up the night.” At 95 years old, Miss LaDuke welcomed the visit with a gentle voice and heartfelt gratitude. For many of our clients who rarely receive visitors, these moments of connection are meaningful — and this visit would become one we never forget.

A Home Full of History

Miss LaDuke’s home had been in her family since 1946, when her mother purchased it. She had lived there since she was 16 years old, making the home a testament to generations of milestones, memories, and resilience.

But after so many years, the home needed significant repair. During the pre-assessment, our team identified several challenges — the most serious being the condition of the roof. Because of this, the Weatherization audit had to be deferred until the roof could be replaced.

Our staff connected her with Grassroots Community Development, a longtime Waco partner specializing in essential home repairs, and hoped the support she needed would come through.

A Year Later — A Fresh Start

Nearly a year passed before the call came:
Her roof had been replaced, and she was ready for us to return.

When our team resumed the audit, the scope of need was clear. The home had never been insulated — not in the attic, not in the walls. The only heat source was an old natural gas wall heater, but the gas valve was in a crawl space so tight it couldn’t safely be accessed. Miss LaDuke had been relying on her gas stove for heat, which is unsafe and inefficient. Drafts throughout the home made it difficult to stay warm in winter or cool in summer, contributing to high utility bills year-round.

A Transformation That Made All the Difference

Using every available funding source, EOAC Weatherization completed extensive improvements that made her home safer, healthier, and more comfortable:

  • Sealed cracks, holes, and gaps throughout the home
  • Patched drywall and added weather stripping
  • Replaced several deteriorated windows
  • Added 16 inches of attic insulation
  • Installed wall insulation
  • Provided a new window A/C unit
  • Installed a 35,000 BTU vented natural gas wall heater with a safely accessible gas valve
  • Ensured the home could maintain safe indoor temperatures year-round

These upgrades did more than improve energy efficiency — they restored comfort and dignity to a home that meant everything to her.

A Moment We Will Always Remember

When the final inspection was complete, our staff asked Miss LaDuke how she felt about the changes. Overcome with emotion, she expressed her deep gratitude. Tears filled her eyes as she described how much safer, warmer, and more comfortable her home felt.

It remains one of the most heartfelt moments our Weatherization team has shared.
