Every child deserves a strong start.

That belief is at the heart of Week of the Young Child, a national celebration recognizing the importance of early childhood education, young children, their families, and the educators who support them every day.

At EOAC, this week is more than a celebration. It is a reflection of the work we do every day in McLennan and Falls Counties through Early Childhood Education.

Why Early Childhood Education Matters

The early years of a child’s life are critical. During this time, children develop the skills that shape their future; how they learn, communicate, build relationships, and understand the world around them.

High-quality early childhood education helps children:

  • Build strong language and communication skills
  • Develop social and emotional confidence
  • Strengthen problem-solving and critical thinking
  • Enter school ready to succeed

But just as important, it supports families; giving parents the tools, resources, and support they need to help their children thrive.

At EOAC Head Start, we see this impact every day.

How EOAC Is Celebrating

Throughout the week of April 11-17, EOAC Head Start classrooms are bringing learning to life through daily themes that highlight the importance of creativity, connection, and exploration.

Music Monday
Children explore movement, rhythm, and sound which builds confidence and self-expression through music and play.
Tasty Tuesday
Families and children engage in activities that promote healthy eating while connecting learning to math, science, and literacy.
Work Together Wednesday
Collaborative projects encourage teamwork, problem-solving, and early STEM skills.
Artsy Thursday
Children express themselves through hands-on art, building creativity, fine motor skills, and social interaction.
Family Friday
We celebrate families as a child’s first and most important teacher, highlighting the connections that support lifelong success.

Each day is intentionally designed to reinforce that learning happens everywhere, and not just in the classroom.

Honoring Our Educators

This week is also a time to recognize the incredible work of our Head Start teachers and staff.

They do more than teach. They nurture. They encourage. They create safe, supportive environments where children and families can grow.

Their dedication helps children build confidence, curiosity, and a love for learning that lasts far beyond the early years.

A Whole-Family Approach

At EOAC, early childhood education is part of a larger mission.

Through Head Start, we support the whole family by providing:

  • High-quality early learning environments
  • Health and nutrition support
  • Family engagement opportunities
  • Goal-setting and resource connections

Because when families are supported, children succeed.

A Proclamation!

The importance of early childhood education is being recognized at the highest levels in our community. Both McLennan County and the City of Waco have officially issued proclamations declaring April 11–17 as the Week of the Young Child. This recognition highlights the critical role early learning plays in shaping the future of our children and our community. These proclamations were issued in partnership with United Way of Waco-McLennan County, and we are grateful for their leadership in bringing this important initiative to the attention of our county and city leaders. Their advocacy helps ensure that young children, families, and early childhood educators are seen, valued, and supported across the Heart of Texas.

The above picture was taken at the McLennan County Commissioner’s Court. The picture includes Judge Scott Felton issuing the proclamation to United Way of Waco CEO Wendy Ellis and a large showing of support form local community partners, including our EOAC team!

Looking Ahead

Week of the Young Child is a celebration, but it is also a reminder.

Investing in young children is one of the most important things we can do for our community’s future. The impact reaches far beyond the classroom, shaping stronger families, a more prepared workforce, and a more resilient Heart of Texas.

At EOAC, we are proud to be part of that work.
