We are grateful to Dr. Brandon Hubbard and Chilton ISD for inviting EOAC to be featured on the Anchor Podcast, where conversations focus on strengthening communities and expanding opportunity.

In this special episode, EOAC’s Director of Community Programs, Kanisha Johnson, joined EmpowerU Case Managers Sonya Rodriguez and LaShenta Talton to share how EOAC serves families across the Heart of Texas and how EmpowerU is helping individuals break barriers and build lasting careers.

What Is EOAC?

During the conversation, Kanisha explained that EOAC, the Economic Opportunities Advancement Corporation, is a nonprofit Community Action Agency serving nine counties and celebrating 60 years of service.

EOAC provides comprehensive support for families, including:

• Energy Assistance
• Weatherization services
• Community Services Block Grant programs
• EmpowerU intensive case management
• Head Start and Early Head Start

As Kanisha shared, EOAC truly serves families from cradle to career. The organization’s work addresses immediate needs while also building long-term stability.

What Makes EmpowerU Different

EmpowerU is not just an assistance program. It is an intensive case management program designed to help individuals and families move toward long-term self-sufficiency.

Sonya and LaShenta explained that the goal is not simply to help someone obtain a job. The goal is to help them gain skills that lead to a lasting career.

Through EmpowerU, EOAC supports individuals pursuing opportunities such as:

• CDL certification
• Nursing assistant programs
• Barber school
• Dental assistant training
• Medical coding and billing
• Real estate licensing
• Disaster relief training
• College degrees

EmpowerU can also assist high school students who are preparing for life after graduation. The program helps with enrollment, FAFSA applications, financial aid navigation, and even provides one-on-one guidance when needed.

As LaShenta shared, sometimes the support looks like sitting down for a mock interview. Sometimes it looks like helping complete college applications. Sometimes it looks like providing work boots, clothing, or even a gas card to ensure transportation is not a barrier.

Each plan is tailored to the individual or family. No two cases are the same.

Breaking Barriers in Rural Communities

A key part of the conversation focused on Falls County and other rural areas. EOAC serves multiple counties, and while demand is high in larger areas, the need is just as real in smaller, rural communities.

Transportation challenges, limited workforce opportunities, and fewer local training programs can create barriers. EmpowerU helps eliminate those barriers by meeting clients where they are and building solutions around their goals.

EOAC is also excited about partnering with Chilton ISD’s Community Empowerment Center to provide local access to coursework, workforce development, and direct support for both parents and students.

More Than Metrics

One of the most powerful moments in the podcast came when Kanisha spoke about the heart behind the work.

While state and federal programs set metrics for moving families out of poverty within a year, EOAC understands that real self-sufficiency often takes longer. EmpowerU is about walking alongside families, not rushing them through a checklist.

The case managers shared how deeply they invest in their clients. They build relationships. They pray with clients when asked. They celebrate milestones. They continue encouraging participants long after the paperwork is complete.

This is not transactional work. It is transformational work.

Empowered to Succeed

At its core, EmpowerU is about helping individuals see their potential and take the next step forward.

As Dr. Hubbard shared in closing, communities thrive when individuals are given opportunities to reskill, upskill, and overcome barriers. EOAC is proud to be part of that work.

We are grateful to Chilton ISD for the opportunity to share our story and to highlight the impact of community action across the Heart of Texas.
